Do Male Gynecologists Get Aroused?

A popular search term that finds its way to this site is “do male gynecologists get turned on?”. It’s a complex question to unravel because trying to answer it leads to more questions. Does the training to become a gynecologist and the role itself actually alter usual male behaviour? Or is it the case that male gynecologists do become aroused but have simply learned how to carry on as if they are not aroused?

Many of the search results for this question claim that no, of course male gynecologists do not get turned on when performing their routine work tasks. A male gynecologist’s comment on Quora states “We get about as turned on as a car mechanic gets when he’s working on a fuel pump”. Another male doctor quoted in Cosmopolitan states “Female sex organs are viewed like any other body part”. Despite the reassurances, some women remain uncertain.

The fact is that most often we can’t be sure one way or the other. Most of the time you can’t even see the doctor when they’re working down there, plus they often wear a long coat. It’s not likely any of them would agree to penile plethysmography, which really would be the only way to know for certain.

It’s unfortunately the case that some male doctors have been caught out, revealing some do get aroused. Thousands of doctors having been disciplined for sexual abuse since 1999. Media has also helped bring to light some shocking cases of doctors who have turned out to be serial abusers. For example, gynecologist Robert Hadden was accused of abusing more than 200 women. A popular post on this site, together with many comments from women who have been abused at the hands of male doctors, has helped enforce distrust.

Given the uncertainty, taking a few precautions before visiting a doctor could help bring some peace of mind. Suggestions include:

  • Bring a friend or relative along to your appointment. If the doctor doesn’t allow the person into the exam room you could refuse to follow through with the appointment.
  • Consider choosing to see a female doctor for exams and procedures.
  • Understand the reasons why you are needing to see a gynecologist in the first place. Some exams and procedures might be unnecessary and/or there might be less invasive alternatives.
